The undeniable importance of collaborating in real-time

We recently read an article stating that real-time is the new-time. We agree here at Drum that in this digital age if something isn’t real-time then it is ignored or deemed unimportant. The instant communication of real-time web meetings provides an immediate answer and gratification. In fact using email, a communication tool we have been using globally for many years, has become laboured. It has become the new snail mail. Today, if you want your email read it is now more efficient to send it via post (people are no longer receiving mail and see it as a novelty when they do!).

It is easy to overlook the extent to which collaboration is changing the way we work. Yet, we are creating working relationships with people who are located in a completely different parts of the world. People we might never physically meet. We only need to look at the open source technology Google released in 2011, WebRTC, and the demand we receive internally within our business lives to see where communication is heading. A real-time web meeting solution is no different. Here are what we believe to be the most important aspects of real-time communication:

Real-time collaboration

To begin with, real-time communication is deemed as communication without delay. You can now meet clients online instead of scheduling meetings in person, making the overall process more time efficient. Web communication has specifically allowed us to decrease the time spent on meetings as anyone can instantly access a meeting without needing to download software. Therefore, avoiding possible technical difficulties which typically tend to arise. Additionally, you can even save more time on communicating via email as you could work on collaborative projects in real-time instead of waiting for a response from a colleague.

This type of communication is guaranteed to boost productivity as everyone can get answers or solve issues by directly interacting with relevant people. Thus, making collaboration more effective. Additionally, since many aspects of our projects can now be accomplished online by connecting to the Internet, communication becomes more flexible. Distance-related boundaries of interaction are instantly eliminated which helps people working from remote locations or those working from home, stay connected and systematically complete the tasks at hand.

Real-time collaboration additionally plays a vital role in making sure everyone remains accountable and productive. Because of this, communication becomes more fluid and everyone involved has the ability to access resources and information in order to produce what is expected in a more efficient and timely manner. This also acts as an empowerment for workers to approach their projects immediately at their own initiative instead of putting them to the side. This not only acts as a benefit for increasing team collaboration but also provides a level of optimisation which could allow projects to run ahead of schedule.

We are increasingly becoming more connected and productive through real-time collaboration. Information is now being accessed and circulated at incredible speed. This has increased the standard of project performance and delivery as people can now collaborate with others without being tied down to their office space. Considering the above aspects of real-time communication can not only help your projects yield greater results but also helps in collectively sharing knowledge and expertise.
